We conducted a mixed-methods case study in NAV IT, a large public sector agile organization. We analyzed 26,317 unique non-merge commits from 703 of NAV IT's GitHub repositories over a two-year period, focusing on commit-based activity metrics from 25 Copilot users and 14 non-users. The analysis was complemented by survey responses on their roles and perceived productivity, as well as 13 interviews. Our analysis of activity metrics revealed that individuals who used Copilot were consistently more active than non-users, even prior to Copilot’s introduction. We did not find any statistically significant changes in commit-based activity for Copilot users after they adopted the tool, although minor increases were observed. This suggests a discrepancy between changes in commit-based metrics and the subjective experience of productivity. ### Copilot’s Island of Joy URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-1007-978-3-031-72781-8-13/ År: 2025 Publiseringssted: Agile Processes in Software Engineering and Extreme Programming – Workshops: XP 2024 Workshops, Bozen-Bolzano, Italy, June 4–7, 2024, Revised Selected Papers Forfattere: Viggo Tellefsen Wivestad, Astri Moksnes Barbala, Viktoria Stray DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-72781-8_13 Open access: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-72781-8_13 Abstract/brødtekst: This study assesses the integration of GitHub Copilot into agile software development practices in one of Norway’s largest public sector organizations. Through a quasi-experimental survey of 115 participants, we differentiate the attitudes of users and non-users of GitHub Copilot regarding their development routines. Findings reveal that Copilot users experience significantly greater focus on engaging tasks and less dependence on colleagues compared to non-users, while non-users maintain a more cautious stance on AI use in the public sector. Further, while users generally showed more positive attitudes and fewer frustrations, these differences were not statistically significant. The study advocates for a mindful adoption of AI tools in agile settings, balancing individual benefits with interdependence and team unity. Yet, little is know about the efficiency of such way of working because the current scale of remote working is unprecedented. In this paper, we present our findings from a company-wide survey at Storebrand - a large-scale Norwegian fintech company, focusing on perceived performance. Our analysis of 192 responses shows that most employees report being able to perform the planned tasks. Further, half of respondents perceive to have increased work hours. Through qualitative analysis of open-ended commentaries of respondents we learned that remote working has dual effects on the perceived work hours - some employees report working longer hours and others report having more work time due to efficient use of the time throughout the day. Finally, we recommend managers to discuss and address the concerning habits of employees caused by increased connectivity and inability to stop working, before these lead to burnout and disturbances in the work/life balance. ### Generative AI and Developer Workflows: How GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT Influence Solo and Pair Programming URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-24251-hicss-2025-883/ År: 2025 Publiseringssted: Proceedings of the 58th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS 2025), Hilton Waikoloa Village, January 7-10, 2025 Forfattere: Viktoria Stray, Nils Brede Moe, Nivethika Ganeshan, Simon Kobbenes DOI: https://doi.org/10.24251/HICSS.2025.883 Open access: https://doi.org/10.24251/HICSS.2025.883 Abstract/brødtekst: This study investigates the impact of generative AI (GAI) tools, like ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot, on software development. GAI tools can automate repetitive tasks, provide code suggestions, and enhance problem-solving. We conducted a case study in a large-scale agile organization, where we examined how GAI tools influence development efficiency and developers’ workflow. During 25 days of observations, we observed 49 programming sessions. GAI was used in all 16 solo programming sessions and 30 of 33 pair programming sessions. Additionally, we conducted 14 interviews with developers and team leaders. In solo programming, GAI tools were said to improve efficiency and reduce stress, allowing more time for solving complex tasks. In contrast, the impact of GAI in pair programming was mixed. GAI tools were less frequently used in pair programming compared to solo programming. Our findings also highlight changes in software development, with developers leveraging GAI for information retrieval and coding assistance. However, challenges such as dependency on AI tools and the accuracy of AI-generated suggestions persist. ### Generative AI in the Workplace: Affective Affordances and Employee Flourishing URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-24251-hicss-2025-720/ År: 2025 Publiseringssted: Proceedings of the 58th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS 2025), Hilton Waikoloa Village, January 7-10, 2025 Forfattere: Astri Moksnes Barbala, Rasmus Ulfsnes, Viktoria Stray, Viggo Tellefsen Wivestad DOI: https://doi.org/10.24251/hicss.2025.720 Open access: https://doi.org/10.24251/hicss.2025.720 Abstract/brødtekst: With the advent of Generative AI (GenAI) and its application in various industries, research has begun showing how this new technology might impact aspects such as teamwork, perceived productivity and the nature of work tasks. However, there is still a lack of studies investigating the emotional dimensions of GenAI use, emphasizing the affective experiences materializing from employing such tools. This study explores the potential of GenAI tools to enhance employee flourishing in a workplace context. By building on interviews with 30 individuals across four tech-intensive companies we investigate how these tools not only provide new possibilities for work practices but also elicit positive affective experiences among users. Drawing on affect studies and affordance theory, this paper suggests that GenAI’s serendipitous nature and ability to streamline mundane tasks not only can enhance operational capabilities but also inspire a dynamic interplay of anticipation and excitement. Our findings point to that the integration of GenAI introduces novel affective affordances that potentially can enhance workplace flourishing, thereby augmenting the traditional understanding of user-tool interaction in professional environments. ### Human-AI Collaboration in Software Development: A Mixed-Methods Study of Developers’ Use of GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-1145-3696630-3730566/ År: 2025 Publiseringssted: FSE Companion '25: Proceedings of the 33rd ACM International Conference on the Foundations of Software Engineering Forfattere: Viktoria Stray, Astri Moksnes Barbala, Viggo Tellefsen Wivestad DOI: https://doi.org/10.1145/3696630.3730566 Open access: https://doi.org/10.1145/3696630.3730566 Abstract/brødtekst: The integration of AI-powered coding assistants into software development presents both opportunities and challenges. These tools promise enhanced productivity and code quality while introducing significant concerns related to workflow integration, accuracy, reliability, and ethical considerations. This study investigates how software developers interact with Generative AI (GenAI) tools in a large-scale public sector organization. Using a mixed-methods approach, we analyze 13 interviews and a survey with 114 respondents to explore the impact of GitHub Copilot (IDE-integrated AI) and ChatGPT (conversational AI assistant) on software engineering workflows. The Human-AI Collaboration and Adaptation Framework (HACAF) is central to our analysis, which integrates insights from several technology acceptance models and theories. Our findings reveal that compatibility within existing workflows plays a crucial role in effectively utilizing GenAI tools. We explore individual, technological, and social factors that influence the adoption of these tools, highlighting the importance of organizational support and collective user patterns within teams. By studying both users and non-users, we provide insights into the factors driving GenAI adoption and the barriers preventing full integration. Our findings contribute to discussions on AI-enhanced IDEs, human-AI collaboration in coding, and the evolving role of LLM-based assistants in modern software development. ### Objectives and Key Results in Large-Scale Agile Organizations: Challenges and Enablers URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-24251-hicss-2025-890/ År: 2025 Publiseringssted: Proceedings of the 58th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS 2025), Hilton Waikoloa Village, January 7-10, 2025 Forfattere: Astri Moksnes Barbala, Nils Brede Moe, Viktoria Stray, Anastasiia Tkalich, Hedda Wasskog Aamo, Mina Uthus, Thomas Allan Nygaard DOI: https://doi.org/10.24251/HICSS.2025.890 Open access: https://doi.org/10.24251/HICSS.2025.890 Abstract/brødtekst: Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) have emerged as a prevalent strategic management tool in large-scale agile development organizations, aiming to enhance operational alignment and performance. This study investigates the implementation of OKRs within a fintech organization that specializes in developing and managing solutions for over one million customers. We identify six key challenges and six enablers experienced in large-scale agile contexts when adopting OKRs as an organization-wide goal-setting framework. Our findings reveal that employees encounter challenges related to goal-setting and the compatibility of OKRs with their work tasks. However, factors such as sufficient training and concrete tasks, like "Monday Commitments," facilitate the successful adoption of OKRs in large-scale organizations. The study offers valuable insights for leaders and managers aiming to maximize the potential of OKRs, particularly within the dynamic and rapidly evolving fintech sector. ### Process Debt: Definition, Risks, and Management URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-1002-smr-70017/ År: 2025 Publiseringssted: Journal of Software: Evolution and Process (JSEP) Forfattere: Antonio Martini, Viktoria Stray, Terese Besker, Nils Brede Moe, Jan Bosch DOI: https://doi.org/10.1002/smr.70017 Open access: https://doi.org/10.1002/smr.70017 Abstract/brødtekst: Process debt, like technical debt, can be a source of short‐term benefits but often leads to harmful consequences in the long term for a software organization. Despite its impact, the phenomenon of process debt has not been thoroughly explored in current literature, leaving a gap in understanding how it affects and is managed within organizations. This paper addresses this gap by defining process debt, describing its occurrence, the risks of its mismanagement, and showing examples of mitigation strategies. Our study began with an exploratory phase involving semi‐structured interviews with sixteen practitioners across four international organizations, allowing us to gather diverse insights into the occurrence and management of process debt. Then, to deepen our understanding and validate our findings, we conducted a cross‐company focus group with ten additional practitioners and analyzed fifty‐eight observations and thirty‐five interviews from a longitudinal case study. The analysis of the research findings led to a definition of process debt and a novel framework. We also report on the causes, consequences, and occurrence patterns of process debt over time. We present mitigation strategies and discuss which ones need further attention for future research. Our results suggest that the debt metaphor may help companies understand how to manage and improve their processes and make process‐related decisions that are beneficial both in the short and long term. ### Social Capital in Software Product Management: A Case Study From a Large-Scale Agile Context URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-1007-978-3-031-72781-8-10/ År: 2025 Forfattere: Astri Moksnes Barbala, Nils Brede Moe, Marthe Nordengen Berntzen DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-72781-8_10 Open access: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-72781-8_10 Abstract/brødtekst: Although large-scale agile software development increasingly is being organized in product areas, little research has to date looked into the skills needed for central roles to succeed with software product management (SPM) in a large-scale setting. Addressing this research gap, this paper provides insights into the skills and competencies deemed essential among Product Managers and Product Owners in ScanBank, a Scandinavian fintech organization counting over 10,000 employees. Our findings reveal that establishing and maintaining social networks are found to be paramount for successfully performing SPM-related tasks in a large-scale agile organizational context. We utilized a model for social capital consisting of three different dimensions to analyze our data material and highlight the value of social capabilities in enhancing collaboration and efficiency within large-scale agile SPM. ### Towards a Conceptualization of Data Rhythm: An Assemblage-Based Approach URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2025-towards-a-conceptualization-of-data-rhythm-an-asse/ År: 2025 Publiseringssted: AISeL Forfattere: Astri Moksnes Barbala Open access: https://aisel.aisnet.org/icis2025/is_researchmethods/is_researchmethods/9/ Abstract/brødtekst: This research-in-progress introduces the concept of data rhythm to explore how digital data both shapes and is shaped by organizational rhythms. Drawing on Deleuze and Guattari’s theory of assemblage, the study responds to the need for more nuanced temporal concepts in Information Systems (IS) research. This paper argues that rhythm, as understood within process philosophy, can offer a fruitful lens for understanding the temporal dynamics of data use. Based on fieldwork in a European law enforcement agency, the study proposes four preliminary propositions for conceptualizing data rhythm, illustrating, for instance, how conflicting rhythms between operational, investigative, and IT units affect data-driven efforts. The police context highlights how data is embedded in sociotechnical rhythms that are both emergent and uneven. The study contributes a theoretical and methodological starting point for examining rhythm as a temporal phenomenon in data-intensive organizations and outlines a research agenda for future empirical and conceptual development. ### User feedback in continuous software engineering: revealing the state-of-practice URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-1007-s10664-024-10557-2/ År: 2025 Publiseringssted: Empirical Software Engineering Forfattere: Anastasiia Tkalich, Eriks Klotins, Tor Thorsrud Sporsem, Viktoria Stray, Nils Brede Moe, Astri Moksnes Barbala DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/s10664-024-10557-2 Open access: https://doi.org/10.1007/s10664-024-10557-2 Abstract/brødtekst: Context Organizations opt for continuous delivery of incremental updates to deal with uncertainty and minimize waste. However, applying continuous engineering (CSE) practices requires a continuous feedback loop with input from customers and end-users. Challenges It becomes increasingly challenging to apply traditional requirements elicitation and validation techniques with ever-shrinking software delivery cycles. At the same time, frequent deliveries generate an abundance of usage data and telemetry informing engineering teams of end-user behavior. The literature describing how practitioners work with user feedback in CSE, is limited. Objectives We aim to explore the state of practice related to utilization of user feedback in CSE. Specifically, what practices are used, how, and the shortcomings of these practices. Method We conduct a qualitative survey and report analysis from 21 interviews in 13 product development companies. We apply thematic and cross-case analysis to interpret the data. Results Based on our earlier work we suggest a conceptual model of how user feedback is utilized in CSE. We further report the identified challenges with the continuous collection and analysis of user feedback and identify implications for practice. Conclusions Companies use a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to infer end-user preferences. At the same time, continuous collection, analysis, interpretation, and use of data in decisions are problematic. The challenges pertain to selecting the right metrics and analysis techniques, resource allocation, and difficulties in accessing vaguely defined user groups. Our advice to practitioners in CSE is to ensure sufficient resources and effort for interpretation of the feedback, which can be facilitated by telemetry dashboards. For this special issue, we invited manuscripts that answer exactly that question in the context of Generative AI and Software Engineering. We received 33 submission, which underwent a rigorous peer review process. This process led to inclusion of 13 manuscripts, which we organized according to McGrath’s Group Task typology in this editorial. In doing so, we acknowledge that not all tasks are equal, and we demonstrate the breadth of tasks that GenAI can assist in. This set of curated articles provides a variety of interesting applications and studies of GenAI technology. We conclude this editorial with an outlook on the future. ### A Case Study of Continuous Adoption in the Norwegian Public Sector URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2024-a-case-study-of-continuous-adoption-in-the-norwegi/ År: 2024 Publiseringssted: Proceedings of the 57th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences Forfattere: Astri Moksnes Barbala, Tor Thorsrud Sporsem, Klaas-Jan Stol Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/3906334 ### A Case Study on Meeting Practices URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2024-a-case-study-on-meeting-practices/ År: 2024 Publiseringssted: The 57th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences Forfattere: Viktoria Stray Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/4068367 ### A journey through SPACE: Unpacking the Perceived Productivity of GitHub Copilot URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2024-a-journey-through-space-unpacking-the-perceived-pr/ År: 2024 Forfattere: Viggo Tellefsen Wivestad Open access: https://api.cristin.no/v2/results/2302848 ### A Journey Through SPACE: Unpacking the Perceived Productivity of GitHub Copilot URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-1007-978-3-031-72781-8-5/ År: 2024 Forfattere: Viggo Tellefsen Wivestad, Rasmus Ulfsnes DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-72781-8_5 Open access: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-72781-8_5 ### Agile and Lean: Organization, Products and Development URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-24251-hicss-2023-868/ År: 2024 Forfattere: Jeffrey Saltz, Edward Anderson, Alex Sutherland, Viktoria Stray DOI: https://doi.org/10.24251/HICSS.2023.868 Open access: https://doi.org/10.24251/HICSS.2023.868 Abstract/brødtekst: Agile and Lean software development methods have become ubiquitous during the past two decades and have been shown to decisively improve the rapidity and success of software projects. However, the rise of virtual teams and ever more complex products have changed the context for which these methods were originally developed. The result are new organizational challenges that threaten to make Agile and Lean irrelevant. Additional pressure comes from new methods such as DevOps and BizDevOps that are increasing team diversity. Agile and Lean research, however, has not kept pace with these changes, creating the risk that Agile and Lean may become irrelevant in the near future. ### Behavioral Aspects of Agile Software Development: A Case Study on Meeting Practices URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-24251-hicss-2023-926/ År: 2024 Forfattere: Viktoria Stray, Nils Brede Moe, Gunnar R. When software teams have end-to-end responsibility and decision-making authority, they avoid handovers between teams and can develop software more quickly. Furthermore, effective coordination through meetings and digital collaboration tools is important for the success of the development of software applications. We conducted a case study in a large FinTech organization to understand behavioral aspects of software development and, specifically, their meeting practices. The results show that employees spend nearly half of their workday in meetings, posing challenges to productivity and availability. Strategies to reduce interruptions include blocking time in calendars, grouping meetings, and using digital tools such as Slack. Our findings indicate that achieving a balance between collaborative activities and uninterrupted work is not only challenging but essential in software development organizations. Consequently, it is important that team members discuss and actively experiment with various strategies to optimize this balance. ### Brobygging mellom datakulturer: Spenninger og løsninger i offentlig sektors datatransformasjon URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2024-brobygging-mellom-datakulturer-spenninger-og-lsnin/ År: 2024 Forfattere: Geir Kjetil Hanssen Open access: https://api.cristin.no/v2/results/2297819 ### Coordination in Agile Product Areas: A Case Study from a Large FinTech Organization URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2024-coordination-in-agile-product-areas-a-case-study-f/ År: 2024 Forfattere: Nils Brede Moe Open access: https://api.cristin.no/v2/results/2302853 ### Coordination in Agile Product Areas: A Case Study from a Large FinTech Organization URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-1007-978-3-031-61154-4-3/ År: 2024 Forfattere: Marthe Berntzen, Silje Alette Engdal, Maja Gellein, Nils Brede Moe DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-61154-4_3 Open access: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-61154-4_3 Abstract/brødtekst: Product teams organized into product areas are becoming more and more prevalent in large-scale agile. While such arrangements are thought to improve the development process and overall product delivery, it is still not clear how this form of organizing alleviates the coordination challenges commonly associated with large-scale agile. In this paper, we report on a case study from a product area in a large FinTech organization. Through analyzing interviews, observations, and strategic documents, we describe how organizing into a product area with vertical and horizontal teams supported inter-team coordination. Fur- ther, we describe seventeen coordination mechanisms used in the product area. Our findings have three main contributions. First, we propose that the product area represent a distinct organizational level that can support coordination in large scale development settings. Second, we found that the team types used in the product area represent different team typologies. Third, pull requests and pair program- ming were used as inter-team coordination mechanisms, and our findings suggest that pair programming to some extent could replace the PR mechanism to further improve product area coordination. ### Copilot's Island of Joy - Balancing Individual Satisfaction with Team Interaction in Agile Development URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2024-copilots-island-of-joy-balancing-individual-satisf/ År: 2024 Forfattere: Viggo Tellefsen Wivestad Open access: https://api.cristin.no/v2/results/2302671 ### Effekten av GitHub Copilot - Tidlige funn fra NAV og DNV URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2024-effekten-av-github-copilot-tidlige-funn-fra-nav-og/ År: 2024 Forfattere: Viggo Tellefsen Wivestad, Astri Moksnes Barbala Open access: https://api.cristin.no/v2/results/2302841 ### ESN Tools as Catalysts for Alignment? At the same time, the development team needs to maintain speed and autonomy. The challenges surrounding the organization of cross-functional teams are thus exacerbated. Through a multi-case study with interviews from five organizations, we show how agile companies use different models of organizing data scientists. We find that there are specific challenges related to each of these organizational models and that some challenges are shared among all the organizational models. Challenges include difficulty coordinating development strategies and a lack of resources. In addition, we identify strategies used to overcome the challenges, including coordinating mechanisms for platform teams, communities of practice for data scientists, and the development of shared playbooks. ### From generation to application: Exploring knowledge workers’ relations with GenAI URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2024-from-generation-to-application-exploring-knowledge/ År: 2024 Forfattere: Rasmus Ulfsnes, Marius Mikalsen, Astri Moksnes Barbala Open access: https://aisel.aisnet.org/icis2024/digtech_fow/digtech_fow/12 Abstract/brødtekst: Generative AI (GenAI), has taken the world by storm and shown extremely promising effects across different fields, ranging from legal to medicine. Why these systems seemingly are better than existing knowledge management systems and expert AI systems while being more decentralized, is intriguing. To shed light on this novel phenomenon, we study knowledge workers in practice, attempting to understand relational generation and application of knowing with ChatGPT through 12 semistructured interviews with early adopters of the technology. We show how knowledge workers and GenAI i) generate relations and ii) apply relations. The findings outline activities like censoring input to GenAI, composing prompts, checking output, making mistakes, and asking for help as constituent practices of relational knowledge work. Furthermore, we outline how ChatGPT is relational in nature, and suggest implications for practice. ### Generative AI in Software Engineering Must Be Human-Centered: The Copenhagen Manifesto URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-1016-j-jss-2024-112115/ År: 2024 Publiseringssted: Journal of Systems and Software Forfattere: Daniel Russo, Sebastian Baltes, Niels van Berkel, Paris Avgeriou, Fabio Calefato, Beatriz Cabrero-Daniel DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jss.2024.112115 Open access: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jss.2024.112115 ### GitHub Copilot i NAV: survey-launch + tidligfunn URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2024-github-copilot-i-nav-surveylaunch-tidligfunn/ År: 2024 Forfattere: Viggo Tellefsen Wivestad Open access: https://api.cristin.no/v2/results/2302836 ### Interest in Working Remotely: Is Gender a Factor? Based on 13 interviews with NAV developers, our case study explores how Slack is employed for knowledge sharing and daily communication across the organization. We used a newly developed framework for communication in agile teams as a theoretical lens. Through our analysis, we found that Slack use had become deeply integrated into the organizational culture and fostered alignment in three main ways: Promoting communication transparency through open discussions visible for developers organization-wide, enhancing communication quality with prompt responses and constant communication, and encouraging communication discipline through structured channels and threads. This study also unveiled some challenges, such as information overload and hindered focus. However, our findings suggest that if common hurdles are overcome, modern ESN tools can reshape how cross-organizational communication plays out in large-scale agile, reinforcing the agile principles of collaboration and motivated individuals. ### Software Product Management in Large-Scale Agile URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-1007-978-3-031-61154-4-4/ År: 2024 Forfattere: Nils Brede Moe, Marthe Berntzen, Astri Moksnes Barbala, Viktoria Stray DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-61154-4_4 Open access: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-61154-4_4 Abstract/brødtekst: Large-scale agile software development is increasingly being orga- nized with product management. Although product management is familiar to software engineering, we need research-based knowledge about organizing prod- uct management in an agile development context. This study focuses on product management challenges and configurations in a Nordic fintech organization with 10,000 employees. We conducted 19 interviews with participants involved in core product management activities. The study identifies ten key factors that hinder product management performance in a large-scale agile product company. Further, we present six product management configurations used in the fintech organiza- tion. The most suitable setup depends on the product lifecycle stage, product size, and development team setup. Our summary of the product management configura- tions and challenges can guide software product managers working in large-scale agile companies. ### Towards a common data-driven culture: A longitudinal study of the tensions and emerging solutions involved in becoming data-driven in a large public sector organization URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-1016-j-jss-2024-112185/ År: 2024 Publiseringssted: Journal of Systems and Software Forfattere: Astri Moksnes Barbala, Geir Kjetil Hanssen, Tor Thorsrud Sporsem DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jss.2024.112185 Open access: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jss.2024.112185 ### Transforming Software Development with Generative AI: Empirical Insights on Collaboration and Workflow URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-1007-978-3-031-55642-5-10/ År: 2024 Forfattere: Rasmus Ulfsnes, Nils Brede Moe, Viktoria Stray, Marianne Skarpen DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-55642-5_10 Open access: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-55642-5_10 ### – Nei, mobilen gjør deg ikke til en gullfisk. Development projects at scale introduce a range of new challenges in managing a large number of people and teams, often with high uncertainty about product requirements and technical solutions. The coordination of teams has been identified as one of the main challenges. This study presents a rich longitudinal explanatory case study of a very large software development programme with 10 development teams. We focus on inter-team coordination in two phases: one that applies a first-generation agile development method and another that uses a second-generation one. We identified 27 coordination mechanisms in the first phase, and 14 coordination mechanisms in the second. Based on an analysis of coordination strategies and mechanisms, we develop five propositions on how the transition from a first- to a second-generation method impacts coordination. These propositions have implications for theory and practice. ### Ansatte bruker ChatGPT som rådgiver. Hvor bra er det? In this study, we investigated a transformation in a Norwegian fintech company with the aim of understanding how the tasks performed by business development can be better aligned with the work of cross-functional development teams. Specifically, we examined the enablers and barriers to coordination between business development and software product development in large-scale agile software development. The organization under study had 25 software product development teams that followed an in-house agile model. We collected data by conducting 13 interviews and collecting various documents. Our findings suggest that having cross-functional fora, having a common understanding of what business development is, and coaching the whole organization to be more agile can improve coordination between business and software development. ### Call for Papers, Issue 1/2025, The Future of Systems Development: Managing Technology, Social, and Individual Aspects URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-1007-s12599-023-00819-6/ År: 2023 Publiseringssted: Business & Information Systems Engineering (BISE) Forfattere: Christoph Rosenkranz, Viktoria Stray, Manuel Wiesche DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/s12599-023-00819-6 Open access: https://doi.org/10.1007/s12599-023-00819-6 ### Data-Driven Development in Public Sector: How Agile Product Teams Maneuver Data Privacy Regulations URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-1007-978-3-031-33976-9-11/ År: 2023 Publiseringssted: Agile Processes in Software Engineering and Extreme Programming: 24th International Conference on Agile Software Development, XP 2023, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, June 13–16, 2023, Proceedings Forfattere: Astri Moksnes Barbala, Tor Thorsrud Sporsem, Viktoria Stray DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-33976-9_11 Open access: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-33976-9_11 Abstract/brødtekst: Datafication processes, the ongoing strive for making organizations data-driven, have in recent years entailed data-focused software projects and more interdisciplinary teamwork. Simultaneously as agile product teams have been directed towards increased use of data for software development, stronger data protection regulations such as GDPR have further complexified the software developer role, whose responsibilities and expectations now expand far beyond mere coding. Seeking to develop an understanding of how data-intensive product teams in the public sector maneuver the legal hurdles emerging in the wake of data governance, this paper builds on 19 interviews with members of two agile product teams in the Norwegian organizations NAV and Entur. Our findings indicate that including a legal expert in the team can boost confidence in data handling practices and avoid delays in deliveries, but it requires effort to synchronize and overcome interdisciplinary barriers. ### En bedre møtehverdag med fart, flyt og smidighet URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2023-en-bedre-mtehverdag-med-fart-flyt-og-smidighet/ År: 2023 Publiseringssted: Kompetanseheving hos SFF Forfattere: Viktoria Stray Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/4555077 ### Er møter arbeidsplassens største tidstyv? While technical debt has been extensively studied, other forms of debt-organizational, process, cultural, and social-have received less attention. We conducted a case study using ten semi-structured interviews, observations, and document analysis to identify coordination mechanisms used in large-scale hybrid agile. We identified organizational debt challenges such as a lack of shared mental models, team coordination, team cohesion, and team learning. Also, the hybrid working arrangement was found to create tension between increased individual autonomy and team objectives, as well as between team autonomy and inter-team coordination. We found 23 coordination mechanisms that the teams used to address challenges in their organization. We propose that implementing many of these mechanisms may help manage organizational debt. ### Påfyll hos NRK Produkt- og teknologiutvikling: Få en bedre møtehverdag med Viktoria Stray URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2023-pfyll-hos-nrk-produkt-og-teknologiutvikling-f-en-b/ År: 2023 Publiseringssted: Påfyll Forfattere: Viktoria Stray Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/4786795 ### Pair Programming Practiced in Hybrid Work URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2023-pair-programming-practiced-in-hybrid-work/ År: 2023 Publiseringssted: ACM/IEEE International Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering and Measurement Forfattere: Viktoria Stray, Nils Brede Moe Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/5241346 ### Pair Programming Practiced in Hybrid Work URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-1109-esem56168-2023-10304797/ År: 2023 Publiseringssted: Proceedings of the 2023 ACM/IEEE International Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering and Measurement (ESEM) Forfattere: Anastasiia Tkalich, Nils Brede Moe, Nina Haugland Andersen, Viktoria Stray, Astri Moksnes Barbala DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/ESEM56168.2023.10304797 Open access: https://doi.org/10.1109/ESEM56168.2023.10304797 Abstract/brødtekst: Pair programming (PP) has been a widespread practice for decades and is known for facilitating knowledge exchange and improving the quality of software. Many agilists advocated the importance of collocation, face-to-face interaction, and physical artifacts incorporated in the shared workspace when pairing. After a long period of forced work-from-home, many knowledge workers prefer to work remotely two or three days per week, which is affecting practices such as PP. In this revelatory single-case study, we aimed to understand how PP is practiced during hybrid work when team members alternate between on-site days and working from home. We collected qualitative and quantitative data through 11 semi-structured interviews, observations, feedback sessions, and self-reported surveys. The interviewees were members of an agile software development team in a Norwegian fintech company. The results presented in this paper indicate that PP can be practiced through on-site, remote, and mixed sessions, where the mixed mode seems to be the least advantageous. The findings highlight the importance of adapting the work environment to suit individual work mode preferences when it comes to PP. In the future, we will build on these findings to explore PP in other teams and organizations practicing hybrid work. ### Responding to change over time: A longitudinal case study on changes in coordination mechanisms in large-scale agile URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-1007-s10664-023-10349-0/ År: 2023 Publiseringssted: Empirical Software Engineering Forfattere: Marthe Berntzen, Viktoria Stray, Nils Brede Moe, Rashina Hoda DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/s10664-023-10349-0 Open access: https://doi.org/10.1007/s10664-023-10349-0 Abstract/brødtekst: Context Responding to change and continuously improving processes, practices, and products are core to agile software development. It is no different in large-scale agile, where multiple software development teams need to respond both to changes in their external environments and to changes within the organization. Objective With this study, we aim to advance knowledge on coordination in large-scale agile by developing a model of the types of organizational changes that influence coordination mechanisms. Method We conducted a longitudinal case study in a growing large-scale agile organization, focusing on how external and internal changes impact coordination over time. We collected our data through 62 days of fieldwork across one and a half years. We conducted 37 interviews, observed 118 meetings at all organizational levels, collected supplementary material such as chat logs and presentations, and analyzed the data using thematic analysis. Results Our findings demonstrate how external events, such as onboarding new clients, and internal events, such as changes in the team organization, influence coordination mechanisms in the large-scale software development program. We find that external and internal change events lead to the introduction of new coordination mechanisms, or the adjustment of existing ones. Further, we find that continuous scaling requires continuous change and adjustment. Finally, we find that having the right mechanisms in place at the right time strengthens resilience and the ability to cope with change in coordination needs in complex large-scale environments. Conclusions Our findings are summarized in an empirically based model that provides a practical approach to analyzing change, aimed at supporting both researchers and practitioners dealing with change in coordination mechanisms in large-scale agile development contexts. ### The Future of Hybrid Software Development: Challenging Current Assumptions URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-1109-ms-2022-3230449/ År: 2023 Publiseringssted: IEEE Software Forfattere: Kieran Conboy, Nils Brede Moe, Viktoria Stray, Jan Henrik Gundelsby DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/MS.2022.3230449 Open access: https://doi.org/10.1109/MS.2022.3230449 ### Twoday - Mer produktiv med bedre møter URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2023-twoday-mer-produktiv-med-bedre-mter/ År: 2023 Publiseringssted: Twoday fagkveld Forfattere: Viktoria Stray Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/3845302 ### Under panseret til ChatGPT: En ikke-teknisk innføring i teknologien og terminologi URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2023-under-panseret-til-chatgpt-en-ikketeknisk-innfring/ År: 2023 Forfattere: Viggo Tellefsen Wivestad Open access: https://api.cristin.no/v2/results/2302760 ### Unscheduled Meetings in Hybrid Work URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-1109-ms-2022-3229554/ År: 2023 Publiseringssted: IEEE Software Forfattere: Tor Thorsrud Sporsem, Audun Fauchald Strand, Geir Kjetil Hanssen DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/MS.2022.3229554 Open access: https://doi.org/10.1109/MS.2022.3229554 Abstract/brødtekst: By studying four development teams in the Norwegian companies NAV and Entur, we found that unscheduled meetings are maintained by using tools like Discord and Zoom to create virtual rooms. During two years of predominantly working from home, employees and managers alike formed expectations about what post-pandemic working life should look like. Many companies are experimenting with new work policies that balance employee- and manager expectations regarding where, when and how work should be done in the future. In this article, we gather experiences of the new trend of remote working based on the synthesis of 22 company-internal surveys of employee preferences for WFH, and 26 post-pandemic work policies from 17 companies and their sites, covering 12 countries in total. Our results are threefold. First, through the new work policies, all companies formally give employees more flexibility regarding working time and location. Second, there is a great variation in how much flexibility the companies are willing to yield to the employees. The paper details the different formulations that companies adopted to document the extent of permitted WFH, exceptions, relocation permits and the authorisation procedures. Third, we document a change in the psychological contract between employees and managers, where the option of working from home is converted from an exclusive perk that managers could choose to give to the few, to a core privilege that all employees feel they are entitled to. Finally, there are indications that as the companies learn and solicit feedback regarding the efficiency of the chosen strategies, we will see further developments and changes in the work policies concerning how much flexibility to work whenever and from wherever they grant. Through these findings, the paper contributes to a growing literature about the new trends emerging from the pandemic in tech companies and spells out practical implications onwards. ### A taxonomy of inter-team coordination mechanisms in large-scale agile URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-1109-tse-2022-3160873/ År: 2022 Publiseringssted: IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering Forfattere: Marthe Berntzen, Rashina Hoda, Nils Brede Moe, Viktoria Stray DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/TSE.2022.3160873 Open access: https://doi.org/10.1109/TSE.2022.3160873 Abstract/brødtekst: In large-scale agile software development, many teams work together to achieve overarching project goals. The more teams, the greater the coordination requirements. Despite the growing popularity of large-scale agile, inter-team coordination is challenging to practice and research. We conducted a case study over 1.5 years in a large-scale software development firm to better understand which inter-team coordination mechanisms are used in large-scale agile and how they support inter-team coordination. Based on a thematic analysis of 31 interviews, 113 hours of observations, and supplemental material, we identified 27 inter-team coordination mechanisms. From this, we offer the following contributions. First, we propose a taxonomy of inter-team coordination with three categories: coordination meetings, such as communities of practice, inter-team stand-ups, and retrospectives; coordination roles, such as the program architects and the platform team; and coordination tools and artefacts, such as Slack and JIRA as well as inter-team task boards, product backlogs, and roadmaps. Second, the coordination mechanisms displayed combinations of four key characteristics, technical, organizational, physical, and social (TOPS), which form the basis of the TOPS framework to capture the multifaceted characteristics of coordination mechanisms. Technical relates to the software product and/or technical tools supporting software development. Organizational pertains to the structural aspects of the organization. Physical refers to tangible or spatial characteristics. Social captures interpersonal and community-based characteristics. Finally, the taxonomy and the TOPS framework provide a knowledge base and a structured approach for researchers to study as well as for software practitioners to understand and improve inter-team coordination in large-scale agile. ### Agile Processes in Software Engineering and Extreme Programming: 23rd International Conference on Agile Software Development, XP 2022, Copenhagen, Denmark, June 13–17, 2022, Proceedings URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2022-agile-processes-in-software-engineering-and-extrem/ År: 2022 Publiseringssted: Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing Forfattere: Viktoria Stray, Klaas-Jan Stol, Maria Paasivaara, Philippe Kruchten Open access: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-08169-9 ### Changes to team autonomy in large-scale software development: a multiple case study of Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) implementations URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-12821-ijispm100102/ År: 2022 Publiseringssted: International Journal of Information Systems and Project Management Forfattere: Tomas Gustavsson, Marthe Berntzen, Viktoria Stray DOI: https://doi.org/10.12821/ijispm100102 Open access: https://doi.org/10.12821/ijispm100102 Abstract/brødtekst: Large-scale transformations of agile ways of working have received more attention in the industry in recent years. Some organizations have developed their own solutions for scaling, whereas many have chosen trademarked frameworks. In large-scale agile software development, many developers and development teams carry out work simultaneously. When autonomous teams need to coordinate toward a common goal, they must sacrifice some level of autonomy. Development, testing, and integrations need to be coordinated with other teams and aligned with an organization´s programs or portfolio. Through the conducting of 28 interviews and 17 on-site visits, this multiple case study explored how team autonomy changed in three agile software development organizations that implemented the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe). The positive changes to team autonomy that they experienced as a result included getting a better overview, making better long-term decisions, giving and receiving help, and signaling limitations. We found two negative impacts on team autonomy: limited feature choice and enforced refinement. The study extends previous research on large-scale agile software development and improves our understanding of impacts on team autonomy. ### Coordination in agile development organizations: A mixed-method study of meetings URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2022-coordination-in-agile-development-organizations-a-/ År: 2022 Publiseringssted: Universitetet i Oslo Forfattere: Jeanette Kirkerud, Viktoria Stray Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/10852/96718 ### Coordination in Hybrid Software Teams - A Case Study in a Large-Scale Agile Organisation URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2022-coordination-in-hybrid-software-teams-a-case-study/ År: 2022 Publiseringssted: Universitetet i Oslo Forfattere: Zixuan Liu, Viktoria Stray, Tor Thorsrud Sporsem Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/4730523 ### Coordination Strategies When Working from Anywhere: A Case Study of Two Agile Teams URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2022-coordination-strategies-when-working-from-anywhere/ År: 2022 Publiseringssted: XP 2022: Agile Processes in Software Engineering and Extreme Programming Forfattere: Tor Thorsrud Sporsem Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/3321863 ### Coordination Strategies When Working from Anywhere: A Case Study of Two Agile Teams URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-1007-978-3-031-08169-9-4/ År: 2022 Publiseringssted: Agile Processes in Software Engineering and Extreme Programming: 23rd International Conference on Agile Software Development, XP 2022, Copenhagen, Denmark, June 13–17, 2022, Proceedings Forfattere: Tor Thorsrud Sporsem, Nils Brede Moe DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-08169-9_4 Open access: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-08169-9_4 Abstract/brødtekst: Effective coordination is the key to successful agile teams. They rely on frequent interactions and mutual adjustment to manage dependencies between activities, which traditionally has been solved by co-locating the team. As the world is adjusting to post-covid work-life, companies are moving towards a work-from-anywhere approach where workers can choose to what degree they want to work from home or office. However, little is known about coordination in such a context. We report findings on developers’ emerging strategies when working-from-anywhere, from an exploratory case study in Norway, including eight interviews. Our study shows that new strategies for mutual adjustment emerged as teams experimented with different tools and approaches: developers chose tasks according to location, tasks with vague requirements are performed collocated while individual tasks requiring focus are best performed at home; large meetings are virtual, preserving co-located time for collaborative tasks; using virtual rooms to maintain unscheduled meetings as they communicate mental presence to teammates, lowering the threshold for intra-team unscheduled talks. The strategies can help organizations create a productive and effective environment for developers. ### Coordination value in Agile software development: a multiple case study of coordination mechanisms managing dependencies URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-1145-3528579-3529182/ År: 2022 Publiseringssted: CHASE '22: Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Cooperative and Human Aspects of Software Engineering Forfattere: Viktoria Stray, Nils Brede Moe, Diane Strode, Emilie Mæhlum DOI: https://doi.org/10.1145/3528579.3529182 Open access: https://doi.org/10.1145/3528579.3529182 Abstract/brødtekst: Background: Agile software projects involve a high degree of coordination between project members to manage complexity and frequent change. There is a need to understand what coordinating mechanisms are valuable for project and team coordination. Coordination mechanisms, such as meetings and Slack, can foster a smooth workflow but also fragment work by interrupting the focused work of developers. Objective: This study aimed to investigate valuable coordination mechanisms and how they can be balanced against the need for uninterrupted work periods. Method: We conducted 30 interviews and observed 109 meetings in five companies using agile software development methods. We used coordination-dependency mapping to identify valuable coordination mechanisms. Results: Valuable coordination mechanisms included instant messaging tools, daily stand-up meetings, boards, open work area, Scrum of Scrums, bug crush days, BizDev meetings, and Make it Happen meetings. Conclusion: We advise companies to identify valuable coordination mechanisms using coordination-dependency mapping and then to bundle, schedule, and substitute these coordination mechanisms to reduce interruptions to development work. ### Datadrevne bedrifter gjør lurt i å lytte til magefølelsen også URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2022-datadrevne-bedrifter-gjr-lurt-i-lytte-til-mageflel-2076543/ År: 2022 Publiseringssted: Knowit Fagseminar Forfattere: Tor Thorsrud Sporsem Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/4401680 ### Datadrevne bedrifter gjør lurt i å lytte til magefølelsen også URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2022-datadrevne-bedrifter-gjr-lurt-i-lytte-til-mageflel/ År: 2022 Publiseringssted: NOKIOS Forfattere: Geir Kjetil Hanssen, Tor Thorsrud Sporsem, Jan Henrik Gundelsby Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/3712099 ### Derfor er det skummelt å stole på data URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2022-derfor-er-det-skummelt-stole-p-data/ År: 2022 Publiseringssted: NAV IT MIND THE GAP Forfattere: Tor Thorsrud Sporsem Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/3835707 ### Derfor forstår du ikke brukeren din - en kort forklaring URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2022-derfor-forstr-du-ikke-brukeren-din-en-kort-forklar/ År: 2022 Publiseringssted: Knowit Fagseminar Forfattere: Tor Thorsrud Sporsem Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/3544932 ### Effektive digitale møter URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2022-effektive-digitale-mter/ År: 2022 Forfattere: Viktoria Stray Open access: https://youtu.be/W6N1OIT8rDc?si=HgB4jHYaBH1-OOtp&t=7142 ### Forskning viser: Datadrevne bedrifter gjør lurt i å lytte til magefølelsen også URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2022-forskning-viser-datadrevne-bedrifter-gjr-lurt-i-ly/ År: 2022 Forfattere: Tor Thorsrud Sporsem Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/3739669 ### Half-Empty Offices in Flexible Work Arrangements: Why Are Employees Not Returning? Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) is a goal-setting framework applied in such distributed settings. This research aimed to investigate how OKRs are used in large-scale agile contexts. We interviewed team members and analyzed documents, including a survey. Our study’s results provide both enabling and limiting situations that make team members’ utilization of the framework either easier or more difficult. We found that OKRs aided knowledge sharing and improved transparency between teams. We present four strategies used for overcoming challenges and maximizing the benefits of using a goal-setting framework. An important takeaway is that companies that employ OKRs must support their employees, especially in defining key outcomes that align and encourage teams toward a common goal. ### Hybridkontoret tvinger frem nye arbeidsformer i utviklerteam URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2022-hybridkontoret-tvinger-frem-nye-arbeidsformer-i-ut/ År: 2022 Publiseringssted: Digi.no Forfattere: Tor Thorsrud Sporsem, Nils Brede Moe Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/4566880 Abstract/brødtekst: https://www.digi.no/artikler/forskning-hybridkontoret-tvinger-frem-nye-arbeidsformer-i-utviklerteam/518852 ### Innlegg: Slik kan nyansatte inkluderes når starten er hjemmekontor URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2022-innlegg-slik-kan-nyansatte-inkluderes-nr-starten-e/ År: 2022 Publiseringssted: Dagens næringsliv Forfattere: Tor Thorsrud Sporsem, Brede Kristensen Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/4264853 Abstract/brødtekst: https://www.dn.no/innlegg/arbeidsliv/hjemmekontor/ledelse/innlegg-slik-kan-nyansatte-inkluderes-nar-starten-er-hjemmekontor/2-1-1141143 ### Løper du fra møte til møte gjennom arbeidsdagen? To better understand coordination in this setting, we conducted a case study through which we examined two teams in a large-scale agile project by observing meetings and conducting 17 interviews. Through the lens of Relational Coordination Theory (RCT), we analyzed the use of the goal-setting framework Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) and the collaboration tool Slack. Slack was used for frequent, timely, and problem-solving communication and, and its use decreased the number of planned meetings. However, discussions often started on Slack and continued in virtual ad-hoc meetings. The use of OKRs facilitated knowledge sharing, helped the teams align their goals, and provided inter-team insights. The main implication of our research is that projects using OKRs need to support project members, especially in formulating the key results that align and motivate the teams to work toward the same mission. ### – Vaktmestrene sitter på en gullgruve URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2021-vaktmestrene-sitter-p-en-gullgruve/ År: 2021 Publiseringssted: Forskning.no Forfattere: Christina Benjaminsen, Tor Thorsrud Sporsem Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/3585400 ### Forskningsfunn fra studie av onboarding i hybrid arbeidshverdag URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2021-forskningsfunn-fra-studie-av-onboarding-i-hybrid-a/ År: 2021 Publiseringssted: Webinar i forskningsprosejtket Transformit Forfattere: Tor Thorsrud Sporsem Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/3726996 ### Forskningsprosjekt på datadrevet digital transformasjon - hvordan vi forsker og tidlige resultater URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2021-forskningsprosjekt-p-datadrevet-digital-transforma/ År: 2021 Publiseringssted: NOKIOS 2021 Forfattere: Tor Thorsrud Sporsem, Jan Henrik Gundelsby Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/5142966 ### Forskningsprosjektet Transformit URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2021-forskningsprosjektet-transformit/ År: 2021 Publiseringssted: Knowit Developer Summit Forfattere: Jan Henrik Gundelsby Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/4741387 ### Hackathon - Ikke så dumt likevel URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2021-hackathon-ikke-s-dumt-likevel/ År: 2021 Forfattere: Viktoria Stray, Rasmus Ulfsnes Open access: https://api.cristin.no/v2/results/1961015 ### Invisible Data Curation Practices: A Case Study from Facility Management URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2021-invisible-data-curation-practices-a-case-study-fro/ År: 2021 Publiseringssted: NOKOBIT: Norsk konferanse for organisasjoners bruk av informasjonsteknologi Forfattere: Tor Thorsrud Sporsem, Morten Arnt Hatling, Marius Mikalsen Open access: https://ojs.bibsys.no/index.php/NIK/article/view/952 Abstract/brødtekst: Facility management, which concerns the administration, operations, and maintenance of buildings, is a sector undergoing significant changes while becoming digitalized and data driven. In facility management sector, companies seek to extract value from data about their buildings. As a consequence, craftsmen, such as janitors, are becoming involved in data curation. Data curation refers to activities related to cleaning, assembling, setting up, and stewarding data to make them fit existing templates. Craftsmen in facility management, despite holding a pivotal role for successful data curation in the domain, are understudied and disregarded. To remedy this, our holistic case study investigates how janitors’ data curation practices shape the data being produced in three facility management organizations. Our findings illustrate the unfortunate that janitors are treated more like a sensor than a human data curator. This treatment makes them less engaged in data curation, and hence do not engage in a much necessary correction of essential facility data. We apply the conceptual lens of invisible work – work that blends into the background and is taken for granted – to explain why this happens and how data comes to be. The findings also confirm the usefulness of a previously proposed analytical framework by using it to interpret data curation practices within facility management. The paper contributes to practitioners by proposing training and education in data curation. ### Måle utviklerteams produktivitet? – Det kan være best å la være, mener forsker URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2021-mle-utviklerteams-produktivitet-det-kan-vre-best-l/ År: 2021 Publiseringssted: Digi.no Forfattere: Tor Thorsrud Sporsem, Torbjørn Moen Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/4658776 ### Målinger bør brukes til forbedring, ikke kontroll URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2021-mlinger-br-brukes-til-forbedring-ikke-kontroll/ År: 2021 Publiseringssted: Gemini.no Forfattere: Tor Thorsrud Sporsem Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/4833345 ### Målinger skal brukes til å sette folk i stand til å forbedre seg - ikke kontrollere eller belønne URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2021-mlinger-skal-brukes-til-sette-folk-i-stand-til-for/ År: 2021 Publiseringssted: Knowit Developer Summit Forfattere: Tor Thorsrud Sporsem Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/3490837 ### Managing Dependencies in Large-Scale Agile URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/doi-10-1007-978-3-030-88583-0-6/ År: 2021 Publiseringssted: Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing Forfattere: Henrik Aspenes Vedal, Viktoria Stray, Marthe Berntzen, Nils Brede Moe DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-88583-0_6 Open access: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-88583-0_6 Abstract/brødtekst: Delivering results iteratively and frequently in large-scale agile requires efficient management of dependencies. We conducted semistructured interviews and virtual observations in a large-scale project during the Covid-19 pandemic to better understand large-scale dependency management. All employees in the case were working from home. During our data collection and analysis, we identified 22 coordination mechanisms. These mechanisms could be categorized as synchronization activities, boundary-spanning activities and artifacts, and coordinator roles. By using a dependency taxonomy, we analyzed how the mechanisms managed five different types of dependencies. We discuss three essential mechanisms for coordination in our case. First, setting Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) in regular workshops increased transparency and predictability across teams. Second, ad-hoc communication, mainly happening on Slack because of the distributed setting, was essential in managing dependencies. Third, the Product Owner was a coordinator role that managed both inter-team and intra-team dependencies. ### Managing dependencies in large-scale agile - A case study of coordination in distributed teams URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2021-managing-dependencies-in-largescale-agile-a-case-s/ År: 2021 Publiseringssted: Universitetet i Oslo Forfattere: Henrik Aspenes Vedal, Viktoria Stray Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/10852/87282 ### Organisering av digitaliseringsprosjekter URL: https://research.lab.knowit.no/publications/2021-organisering-av-digitaliseringsprosjekter/ År: 2021 Publiseringssted: Concept arbeidsrapport 2021-1 Forfattere: Torgeir Dingsøyr, Finn Olav Bjørnson, Tor Thorsrud Sporsem Open access: https://hdl.handle.net/11250/2739019 Abstract/brødtekst: Stadig flere prosjekter inkluderer grader av digitalisering, spesielt prosjekter med innovasjon i produkter, tjenester eller arbeidsmetoder.
