## Abstract

Background: Effective management of Technical Debt (TD) is essential for improving software quality and sustainability. However, there is a lack of evidence about the benefits of TD management practices.

Objective: This experience report involving a large international company, Visma, aims to assess the impact of employing TD practices on an organization’s capabilities and outcomes related to TD.

Method: This experience report describes the usage of two tools, TDMA and TD Pulse, to respectively track the practices and assess TD management capabilities. Over eight years, some teams in Visma adopted recommended TD practices (TDMA), while others either lacked formal TD practices or relied on ad hoc, informal methods. The TD Pulse questionnaire was then administered to both groups to evaluate their TD management capabilities and two key performance indicators (KPIs): time wasted due to TD and missed business opportunities attributed to TD.

Results: The analysis indicates that the implementation of TD practices has significantly enhanced various TD management capabilities and reported a better TD management outcome according to the KPIs, demonstrating clear benefits as shown by the results from TD Pulse.

Conclusions: This experience report suggests that organizations generally experience positive outcomes from adopting TD management practices, indicating that companies stand to benefit substantially from their implementation.
